Some people can be paranoid
This guy seems to think TiVo is making his unit record 'porn' to corrupt him or his family.

I wonder how many people need to tell him his being paranoid before he believes it - or maybe he'll think it is a conspiracy.

I am: amused amused

Maybe he thought the Spice channel was about cooking...I've made that mistake.

I'm not quite sure what it IS about (soft porn, yes?) but I can see where someone could think that. TV networks/channels often have weird names these days. Like "SpikeTV". Um, OK. (I record ST:TNG and DS9 off of it.) What's that supposed to mean? :p "Network for Men"? All right, but I'm female and I like a lot of the stuff in the lineup, but then, I've always been a tomboy, but I know a fair number of women who like Star Trek! Sheesh.

Heh. I like his proof as to why he's right and you're wrong:, which is, "Let's look at this logically: your first theory is wrong. Your second theory is wrong. Your third theory is wrong. Hey, I'm right!"

Which person in the thread is our friend here? (Not the moron! :p) I think I know, but want to be sure.

Can I hit the guy on the head with a dead hard drive? Please? Please? Please? I have some lying around, you know ... along with the rest of the typical geek junk.

Aw, c'mon, it's a troll. The guy's simply trying to find a way to make TiVo forums buzz about him.

On a different but related note:

Huh. I had absolutely no idea that excessive thumbs-up/down marks were bad. Has TiVo considered noting that in a place more prominant than the forums (or does it already)? It's not really intuitive, and I'll bet that if I didn't know it, most other TiVo users don't either.

Re: On a different but related note:

No matter how bad it is, I plan to leave "Dragonball Z" at 3 down because of my pure hatred for that show. "Mythbusters" stays at 3 up because that show is genius.

Re: On a different but related note:

It is bad in that it can have unintended consequences. When you thumb a program you're not just rating that program but it also impacts the actors, director, category, etc. So giving something three thumbs down can poison other programs, and giving something three thumbs up can make the unit record a lot of stuff with overlapping actors, etc.

Re: On a different but related note:

Yea, I got that. My point was that that isn't entirely obvious, and that perhaps TiVo should be a little more transparent as to how the suggestions system works, so users can use it more effectively.

As it is, it's not obvious that saying "I hate this show! Three thumbs down!" can make the TiVo not record other shows that, for example, have the same actor - and given that the TiVo's connections between shows can be a little strange and nonintuitive to begin with, that's not a good thing.

What noone brings up is porn is something you have to explicitly pay for from your provider (unless it's the soft porn Cinemax shows late night). If porn is corrupting himself and his family, he's specifically paying for it to do so! Those channels rarely are part of a package, unless it's a porn package and they're never sold in the defaults!

It could be suggesting the 6 hour pay per view blocks of porn. I'm pretty sure you can order Playboy in 6 hour blocks. I know you can order Spice channel that way. It's cheaper for the occasional viewer than spending the $16 to add the channel a-la-carte to your programming package.

Um, and I know this because I used to be a rep for Adelphia, not because I order porn.

Ah, I took all pay-per-view options out of my programming. :)

Otherwise, I'd just get Tivo recordings that are scrambled.
