Oh and BTW...
I know I was irrational in my last post in which I ranted about people being irrational. I'm a Discordian, deal with it.

The rant was more about me feeling like shit and having a convenient target to vent some of that feeling toward than really caring about the debate. Frankly I don't really care which way LJ goes. I understand the issues on both sides, and I really do think that just disallowing all nudity in the default icon would be fair and removes the "I know it when I see it" aspect of determining if any given icon is visible. No genitals, no ass, no nipple or aureole - male or female, regardless of age. No exceptions for 'artistic' content, breastfeeding, etc. That's balanced. And that means it'll piss off the most people possible, of course.

In the end I expect that no matter what LJ decides to do, there will be happy people and pissed off people. Some small number of people will leave in a huff (or a minute and a huff), and then it'll all blow over - until the next Big Drama.

Oh, but I do really feel that people who run to lawyers over every little thing need a belt sander exfoliation. What are we, little children running to mommy or daddy? Have we lost our ability to rationally discuss issues and negotiate a compromise? Yeah, I know, most people seem to think 'compromise' means 'the other party does it my way'. Low opinion of humanity? Whatever gives you that idea?

If you want to add real examples to your ranting...

*hugs* I'm sorry you are having an allergy-filled week of hell. If I weren't already booked this weekend, I'd come visit with grillables and dessert. :-)

Yes, we are. The whole direction of our society is to further and further remove responsibility from the individual and place it on something higher. Ultimately, the government is left to attempt to legislate intelligence, and it just doesn't work.

Heck, take a look at the recent supreme court decision that basically said that since cigarette manufacturers are creating a product they know is dangerous, they can't use as a defense that the user knew it was dangerous and bears some responsibility for chain smoking and getting cancer.

No accountability for the individual.

Can't take time out of your busy life to parent your kids? Blame it on the schools when your kid misbehaves. Ruin old Bugs Bunny cartoons with editing because you can't be bothered to teach your kids the difference between TV and reality (or right from wrong) etc etc

Most of the consumer safety type issues that ruin it for the rest of us are because people refuse to be held accountable for their own stupidity.
"well you didn't say not to swallow these rivets, so it's not my fault that I nearly died when I tried to do that"

Then there's the blatant disregard that people have for their fellows, and do something stupid or lame that bugs the majority and their defense is "well, there's no law against it", and low and behold you've got laws passed that tell people they can't go duck hunting with a mule, or take baths in the middle of main street and so on.

Have we lost our ability to rationally discuss issues and negotiate a compromise?

Damn straight we have.

It doesn't matter what your viewpoint is, the method of arguement is to assume any opinion is of the extreme (demonize your opponent), and then argue for the other extreme. It saves on having to actually think about things. Basic political punditry.

Yeah, I know, most people seem to think 'compromise' means 'the other party does it my way'. Low opinion of humanity? Whatever gives you that idea?

Yeah, not gonna comment.
