Yes, but it's not fair to say to a group with that name:

"I have a Series 1 TiVo with lifetime sub. Should I buy a Series 3 and transfer the sub, or should I buy or build a MythTV for about the same amount of money? TiVo has a great interface, but also a history of taking features away and cosying up to Hollywood. MythTV will always get better, and I can burn DVDs in the same box for essentially no extra cost."

Well, a TiVo focused group would be biased one way, and a MythTV focused group the other.

I don't know that they have a history of taking features away. A number of things have been misreported over the years. The Series3 is missing some features, due to CableLabs, which will hopefully be re-enabled once permission is worked out. And the 'cozying up' has been greatly exaggerated, TiVo openly fought the MPAA & NFL to get TiVoToGo approved, TiVo has continually filed with the FCC to support CableCARD and oppose cable MSO petitions to slow the deployment or restrict capabilities, TiVo added auto-conversion for portable devices to TiVo Desktop despite threats of legal action from the MPAA and TV networks, etc.

About the only thing they do that is 'cozy' is hiding the 30-second skip functionality behind a backdoor code.

There are also TiVos that burn DVDs in the box - I own two of them. :-)

Wait, so the 30 second Skip is there? OMG, how do I do that? Wait, I will just go to the owners LJ group. I just got a Series 2 Model 1.5 months ago and LOVE it. Would you happen to know if there is any other way to burn DVDs from Tivo Desktop than using that 25 buck software?

Thanks,

Enter Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select while watching a recording - then the Advance (->|) button is a 30-second skip button. Enter it again to disable, it is a toggle. A reboot resets it.

As for burning DVDs - DirectShow Dump will strip the DRM, leaving the MPEG-2 to do with as you please. TiVo Decode will also do so: http://tivodecode.sourceforge.net/
