WTF does 'Cowboy up' mean?
OK, not being a sports fan I completely fail to get the meaning of 'Cowboy up' which I keep seeing in connection with the Red Sox.

I have a feeling it's a reference to that period when the Cowboys were ridiculously dominant and all of a sudden a whole lot of people became Cowboys fans. Almost overnight, as it were. Not entirely sure though, since the only sport I watch is baseball, and that's pretty irregular at best. Since I watched a good, oh, three games this season. Damn work schedule.

End of last month, when the sox were trying to make it into the playoffs and had a bit of a bad streak, Bill Mueller said something about how it's "time to cowboy up" - basically, get on the ball and quit losing - and they played better after that, so now it's rather become their theme for the playoffs. As I understand it. Supersitious team, superstitious fans, that sort of thing. :)

Did you see the game last night?

Cowboy Up

Actually, it was Kevin Millar that said this. (I know, Bill Mueller, Kevin Millar. Names are so close that it's hard to keep them straight!)

"Cowboy Up" is a rodeo term (according to Millar, when I heard him on WAAF last week) that means "Suck it up". Probably also means "Get back on the damned horse and stop yer whinin'" ... that's my own spin on it anyway.

Re: Cowboy Up

This is correct meaning of it in that context! I'm a native Texan, and I'll vouch for it.

Re: Cowboy Up

Ahh... ok. :) I missed whereever it was first said and apparently the explanation I got wasn't entirely correct. It makes a lot more sense now.

No, I didn't see it. I think I was asleep. :-) I was up during the day, but I felt tired and it was chilly, so I crawled under my blankets and fell asleep and woke up in the late evening.

Everytime I have heard the phrase used, and I have heard it for quite some time before the Sox games, it has meant "suck it up, get with the program, get out there and win". aka "it's time to get rowdy like a cowboy"

I was wondering the same thing. It's blazed in lightbulbs across the Pike!

Well whatever it truly means, I think it's kind of a stupid catchphrase to use up here in the North...

Oh well, let's whip them damn Yankees!
