Haven't we met before?
Freaky... OK,so I'm watching an episode of 'Real Sex' (#25, from 2000) TiVo grabbed off one of the HBO channels on Monday and they're doing a piece on the Blue Angel club in NYC. Kind of an erotic performance art club.

So one of the dancers looks really familiar, and even *sounds* familiar when speaking... Then they show her doing her routine and her music is Ani Difranco's 'Pixie'. The only name they gave for her was 'Ivy' or 'Poison Ivy' - unless she's as nuts as I am, a stage name. Considering all of the Ani shows I've been to over the years, especially in the northeast, I wonder if maybe I really did meet her at some point. Considering the other weird coincidences I've had, and how much Eris likes to toy with me, I wouldn't be surprised.

She had some nice comments, like - "I think gender is all in your head and I think I'm neutral gendered in my head. Not male, Not female." From her act and her comments she seemed like a really cool person, the kind of person I'd hang with.

Interesting to see someone dance to 'Pixie' too. (Maybe I should dump this episode to disc...)

I'm a pixie
I'm a paper doll
I'm a cartoon
I'm a chipper cheerful free - for - all
I light up a room
I'm a color - me - happy girl
Miss live and let live
And when they're out for blood
I always give

The man behind the counter looks like he's got
A half a dozen places he'd rather be
And furthermore it looks like he's prepared
To take it all out on me
Buddy, I don't really care what your problem is
Just don't make it mine
Come on kids, let's all hold hands
And pretend we're having a good time

Maybe you don't like your job
Maybe you didn't get enough sleep
Well nobody likes their job
Nobody got enough sleep
Maybe you just had
The worst day of your life
But you know there's no escape
And there's no excuse
So just suck up and be nice
Be nice
Be nice
Be nice...

All the privileged white kids on TV playing at death
Branching their cold cuts with their ghostly make - up
And their heroine breath
And all the little fishes are flapping wildly on their hooks
While all the top critics finally meaning in the telephone book

The little emperor has no clothes
So he can't come out to play
And besides which life is suffering
And he likes it that way
And the little guy is not so friendly
But you know life has been cruel
So wipe that smile off your face baby
And try to be cool

Maybe you don't like your job
Maybe you didn't get enough sleep
Well nobody likes their job
Nobody got enough sleep
Maybe you just had
The worst day of your life
But you know there's no escape
And there's no excuse
So just suck up and be nice

Yeah, I would like to perfect the art
Be studiously aloof
Like life is just a boring chore
And I am living proof
I could join forces with an army of ornery hipsters
But then I guess i'd be out of a job
So I guess that's out of the picture

Cuz I'm a pixie
I'm a paper doll
I'm a cartoon
I'm a chipper cheerful free for all
And I light up a room
I'm the color me happy girl
Miss live and let live
And when they're out for blood
I always give

I am: curious curious

Hee....I love that song. I totally relate to it as a dancer too, as well as that person who hangs out with goths, and tries not to roll her eyes at the mopey ones. I think that song captures more than a bit of who I am in life.

I used to use that song and 'More Than This' by The Cure as my pixie set in 'normal' strip clubs too....minus all those flowers. It was a set suggested by my long time friend Justin, who turned me on to Ani. He's called me by the nickname Pixie since I was 17.

i've only been to two Ani Shows ever...one in Woodstock NY, one in Charlston NC. But I grew up in boston, up until 9 years ago, when I moved to upstate NY. You may have met me thereabouts!

It is a great song, and it has been stuck in my head since I watched Real Sex and saw your segment. (Speaking of - still on my TiVo... *be-boop* And playing...) When I'm not listening to something else it creeps back into my brain. :-) Yeah, I can see it going really well with 'More Than This' too...

I've never been into any kind of strip club. I think mainly because the kinds of stories I hear about the clubs and that most of the people I met who go a lot were the 'drunken frat guy' stereotype. And how the clubs are generally portrayed in film and TV programs.

But logically I realize that doesn't make sense since people I know and respect, like that_xmas and qedrakmar go to strip clubs too. And I'm sure part of it is the "it isn't nice to objectify women" indoctrination of youth. But seeing things like the Blue Angel, it looked like a very cool show. The "Fluorescent Fantasy" set was like an erotic Blue Man Group. :-)

Hmm, I grew up in upstate NY - in and around Schenectady. My parents started Appolo Heating, in Rotterdam, and still come to NY a lot (they live in Florida now). They have a place on Ballston Lake that I visit now and then. (I'm supposed to be a guest at Genericon at RPI in January.) I moved to Worcester, MA in 1989 to go to WPI. Lived here until late 1995 when I moved to Berkeley, CA. Then I moved to Waltham, MA in early 1998, and then back to Worcester last summer.

I've been into Ani since 1993 when I saw her play at WPI. I haven't been to one of her shows in a few years now, because I'm being lame, but I've been to at least 40 of them, I completely lost count. I got so into her that I played 'dead head' and used to drive all over New England to see her shows. I caught more when I was in CA, and I even caught a couple in Germany when she played there the summer of 1994 (I was in Europe working on my history degree that summer - 50th anniversary of D-Day and all). I used to run her email lists and such. :-) (I'm a geek boi.)

And I'm completely babbling.
