Every once in a while one finds something that seems just totally profound, in that it explains something one has struggled with throughout life.

GSF #4, Friendship Is Transitive, has been the main reason most of life is dysfunctional for me. Strangely enough, it is because I have never believed it. I believe it is more accurately designed as a non-geek social fallacy.

Social networking has been anathema to me forever, and now that so many things require someone's vouchsafe (jobs, doctors, mechanics, getting an apartment/mortgage/loan, hearing about social things), I have found myself less and less capable of dealing with the world.

Chances are, if someone I know recommends something, I am less likely to trust it than random selection. Not because I have useless friends, but because my preferences are different. When you add in the social stigma of not liking a recommendation (the recommending friend seems to take it personally if you didn't like your haircut, etc.) the whole problem becomes infinitely complex.

That was indeed an interesting article. I think I suffer most from a form of GSF5... or at least I did back in Oklahoma when I had a pretty close-knit group of friends.
