Boy, that was cheery
I was already feeling kind of down tonight, so then I go and watch A.I. - which I'd TiVo'd off HBO recently. Boy, what an upbeat 2.5 hours that is. I must add that to my The Plague Dogs, Grave of the Fireflies and When The Wind Blows "Films to off yourself to" marathon list.

I am: depressed depressed
Current Media: TiVo: A.I.

Did you stop 15 minutes before the end, like the director should have?

Unfortunately no, since it just got more depressing in those 15 minutes.

Oh look, the human race is extinct, you're the last 'survivor' of that time - oh, and via pseudo-science we can bring back your 'mom' for you, but just for one day and then she'll die again for good.

I'm still not sure what the hell the point of the film is supposed to be - humans suck and life is meaningless?

And what the fuck happened to FREEZE THE ATLANTIC SOLID?

Okay, so if you stop 15 minutes before the end-- basically, the second time he's underwater, sitting in his little helicoptor thingy watching the Blue Fairy, you get a VERY different movie. You get an existentialist parable about man's search for his creator. And yeah, it's REALLY depressing, but it's not cloying or manipulative-- it's just dark and terrible, revealing the utter meaninglessness of existence. He should float down, see the blue fairy, and then sit there, gazing at her, as the camera pulls back, and back and back, until he's just a tiny speck of light in the undersea darkness, and then BAM, screen black, blotting out even that tiny speck, and roll credits. THE END.

If you keep going afterward, you get sentimental bullshit, designed to undermine the whole rest of the movie, and reduce it to crap. Crap crap crap. Feh.

Yeah, I can see that - it really felt like the end at that point too. The rest seemed tacked on and didn't really seem to relate very well. And there was more in the last 15 minutes that felt stupid - that he somehow has a powersupply still good after 2000 years, that something managed to freeze the oceans, that the human race somehow went extinct and machines evolved into super-tall, fragile looking grey wannabes... that shit about time-space holding the pattern for anything that'd ever happened...

It really did make the movie seem kind of cheesy when it had been good, albeit depressing, until that point. Oh, and it just tacked on more depression.

Boy he looks like a hobo.

I wonder if it will really make a difference that we caught him...

I figure you can marathon them and get a group together and see who can hold out the longest as the depression piles up.

My list also includes "Grave of the Fireflies", "A Beautiful Mind", and "Requiem for a Dream".

I don't think I've seen any of the ones on your list. I shall have to endeavor to do so... when I'm in a more cheery mood, that is.

Oh hell, how did I forget Grave of the Fireflies?! Yeah, that's on there.

I haven't seen the other two.

Windaria should be there also. Damn, what a depressing film.

And who can omit Schindler's List? Sure, the message is hopeful, but it certainly beats on you some getting there.
