Zoner en fuego!

Around 18:00 this evening I started backing up bits of my work laptop in preparation for a complete reinstall. Several weeks ago it started getting very flaky - higher ups decided to install McAfee AV, FW, etc, on all the PCs. That was fine. But then some people had trouble with it (not me) so they decided to *remove* it from all machines and get a refund on the license. Then install Kaspersky AV, which most people had used before - except that I had Norton AV before. So my box went from Norton to McAfee to Kaspersky, and went mad. I think it was most likely the FW install/removal, since the main problem was with network resources breaking. And I'd done development on the box, etc, and the SQL Server install I did a few weeks ago was wrong and I needed to remove it and redo it anyway, etc. Since the box was acting flaky I just plain didn't trust it anymore.

It is 02:25 and I'm still installing shit - I've installed WinXP, SP1, Office Pro Enterprise 2003, FrontPage 2003, Visio Pro 2003, OneNote 2003, IIS, all the windows update and office update patches... I still need to install SQL Server and Visual Studio, but I'm too tired so I'm knocking off. I'd probably screw up at this point anyway. Then, of course, will come Mozilla, SecureCRT, SecureFX, emacs, WinCVS, Semagic, Trillian, Palm conduits, and any other use space apps I'm forgetting. And, of course, the Cyphermint software. A lot of the installers for that stuff I have backed up on one of our servers, but I have to wait until our net admin joins this box to the domain in the morning to get at them.

I can't believe reinstalling one box could take a full workday's time... (Oh - I will say that if you have to install MS-ware having a full MSDN is kind of nice, the company bought one for me. Considering the discounts available on them, and the retail price of all the software, I'm not sure why you'd buy retail. I just requested every license key and printed them all.)

While that's been chugging away I've been working my way through my *entire* LJ, from the first post to the last post. I edited everything to hard code the image instead of 'default', and I also collected a TON of stuff into memories. I wish there was a way to rename the groupings, the 'Quizzes' group is more like 'Quizzes, Memes, and Q&A'. I basically culled my entire posting history for things I might want to have more readily at hand. So if you want to check them out, they're all right here.

Zoner en fuego!

Long day

Well, I left the office at 04:00 - after my last post I'd installed Acrobat, Mozilla, SecureCRT, SecureFX and Semagic, and downloaded WinCVS and ActivePerl. I knew the versions of those I had backed up were out of date anyway, so I just grabbed new ones. I did more installing today between working on other things - Trillian, XMLSpy, Flash, Shockwave, Visual Studio, etc. And did a lot of configuring.

I have to say that I do like Office 2003, especially Outlook 2003, better than the 2k or XP editions. There are some features in Outlook that, shocking as it is, I really like - like the 'view all unread' option so even if you filter things into folders there is one place with all unread messages. (My new default view.) And the ability to show all email in plain text, instead of HTML, RTF, etc. No matter how it was sent.

I still have a few things to grab and install, like Cygwin. I'll probably wait to reinstall PHP and such until I need it again.

Anyway, I left at 04:00 and my car was on vapor so I had to fill up at the only local gas station that was open, right off 495. It was damn cold, and they're overpriced to take advantage of the people popping off the highway to gas up. Oh well. Then I hit Denny's since I hadn't eaten since lunch and that was the only thing open. I got home, cranked up the heat since the thermometer said it was 48F *inside*, and dove into bed a bit before 06:00. My pre-alarm went off at 08:30, my main alarm at 09:00, and i finally hauled my ass out of bed at around 09:30. It was still DAMN cold in my place, but certainly better than 48F. It took me twice as long to do anything since I was kind of staggering about, so I didn't make it into the office until a bit before 11:00. It is 20:00, and I should be bailing RSN.
