Oktoberfest Piss-Up: Take 2 - Friday October 15, 2004, 19:00

OK. The last Piss-Up was a small affair on short notice. Well, Oktoberfest is only running through October 20th people! I talked to lizzielizzie and we figured Friday the 15th was a good date for the next gathering. I was going to say something Monday but forgot, then I was out of it yesterday. But it is still over a week away, so you have time.

If you're reading this, you're welcome. If you have a GweepNet account, then RSVP here. Otherwise leave a comment to let me know you're coming. I'll handle reservations.

Long overdue...

A couple of weeks ago I went to see Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - and I was seriously impressed. Not that the writing is especially good or anything, but you can really forget the entire god damned film is a special effects shot. And the designs for things was very Gernsback Continuum. The Zeppelin docking with the Empire State Building made me laugh gleefully. How many of you knew that that was the purpose of the tower on the top of the building? Really, the designers expected airships to dock with skyscrapers in the city and disembark their passengers a thousand feet over the streets. I wonder why that never caught on?

Anyway, this movie isn't just pulpy, it is Grower's Style! All the pulp. Anyone who is into pulp sci-fi stories needs to see this movie - z_gryphon, that means you/ :-)

Really, the movie is a lot of fun. The characters are archtypical archetypes all the way, as they should be in this kind of story. None of this hero with a dark past shit - the hero is a HERO. The world is very black and white, as it should be in this kind of story. It is a fun movie and it doesn't take itself too seriously. I also enjoy how, in the spirit of good pulp, they never comment on the radical difference in tech levels. The P-40 Warhawk is the hot shit fighter - but the villain appears to have anti-gravity flying platforms. Who cares!

See this movie on the big screen.
