Spam in the time machine
Something weird happened a few days ago. My spam volume took a big jump - UP. But what makes it really weird that that most if it mentions me by name - my *old* name. I changed my name nearly four years ago and I don't think I ever posted from my domain with it anyway. It was on my resume and such, but not much else. So it is like someone compiled a list of names and addresses in the late 90s and somehow that list just came into widespread use.

I've been getting a lot of spam aimed at mortgages in Johnson City, NY. I lived there from 1997 - 1999.

Did you originally register mz.org as your old name? Whois mining is likeliest.

usenet?

Perhaps harvested off usenet, anno mid-90s? I still get a load of spam to both $username and root at a subdomain that I haven't publically used (although it's still active - my provider changed names so I'm not registered for that in whois) since about '96 or so.
