OK Cupid questions
The most interesting part of OK Cupid is how they do the matching based on statistics. Every answers questions, indicates how they'd like their match to answer, and gives a weight to the question ranging from Irrelevant to Mandatory. Each of the five levels are given a point value - 0,1,10,50,250. If someone answers with one of the replies you indicated were acceptable then they get the points, otherwise they get 0. So say you indicate question A is very important (50) and question B is a little important (1) - and someone matches A and doesn't match B. Then they get 50 of 51 possible points, or a 98% match. Now, it isn't that simple because they also scale based on the total number of mutual questions answered, etc. But you get the point. That's a fairly interesting way to do things. But what makes it such a time sync is that any user can submit questions into the system. They get vetted, but it does make for quite a range of questions. And questions are automatically weighted since someone can always say a it is irrelevant and then that question won't matter to someone matching your criteria.

I can't believe they didn't take...

Is it important for people to have a life outside of their primary relationship?

Can't for the life of me figure out why they didn't take this one, unless it's because they had one like it already. This is a really, really good question to ask of any prospective relationship.

Yeah, I thought so too, but I remember if I saw another one like it. (If I thought I had I wouldn't have even submitted it.) Some of the others I submitted and at about the same time someone else must've submitted one like them and they went live before they got to mine.

What, no indication how you answer these questions yourself?

Inquiring minds want to know :-D

Actually, they all seem like good questions, and I remember the ones that you have up there that were vetted. Why the Trojan War question, just out of curiosity?

Now, they edited my originals in some cases - the question about complimenting a stranger had a 3rd choice "No, I wanted to but I was afraid they'd think I was creepy" - or something like that. And that would've been my choice. The one about the lover being frisky - well, I don't use 'frisky', that was their re-wording, and it originally had more options. Actually they basically rewrote that one, but it is still kind of the same.

The Trojan War question is a Discordian question - very few people remember who *really* started the war. :-)

Re:

Ah, see, I got the question wrong, I thought it was Hera. Then again, I blame her for everything, she was such a spoilsport (Back to the mythology books...)

Interesting choice on #3. I'd probably say the same thing. Fits my theory that there are givers and takers in the world and you're lucky if you're a giver and you find another one... the takers tend to grab them first ;-)

Eris rolled the Golded Apple which said "For the fairest one" into the feast which started the other three Goddesses bickering - they turned to Zeus to decide, he ducked by saying a mortal should do it, they grabbed Paris, he took Aphrodite's bribe to pick her... and the rest is history. ;-)

Yeah, I had one lover who was a strong giver too - and she was the best lover I ever had. Hard to describe - it was more about having fun than having sex. Very relaxed.

Re:

Well, Aphrodite must have been a little lacking in self esteem if she felt she had to bribe Paris to get his vote, eh? Heh.

Thumbs up to givers.
zonereyrie From: zonereyrie Date: February 5th, 2004 07:57 pm (UTC) (Direct Link)
Well, all the goddesses tried to bribe him. Athena offered him wisdom, Hera offered him power - Aphrodite offered him the love of the most beatiful woman on earth. Paris went with door #3 - then he finds out she's all ready married and he has to go snatch her. :-)

Paris was pretty much screwed no matter what he did in that situation. He tried suggesting they split the apple, but they were having none of that. No matter what choice he made he'd have two pissed of goddesses on his case.

Me and my creaky memory. It's all coming back to me, now. Of course, I think I got most of my Greek and Norse mythology from Edith Hamilton as a child, thanks to an English teacher cousin's cast off books.

I'm not surprised that you have an LJ, Ro, but I am totally surprised that you know zoner. and me. The world just got a little bit smaller. :)

It's been a couple years since I've seen or emailed you... but I'm a student and former listbaby of yours. Of all places I'd expect to bump into you again, this wasn't really it!

I hope you and mani are well!

autumnesquirrel From: autumnesquirrel Date: February 5th, 2004 08:15 pm (UTC) (Direct Link)
It's like a personality test except they keep adding more questions which makes it a sustainable amount of fun instead of occasional entertainment. I end up taking the Myers-Briggs test once every year or two, and I've wandered back and retaken the LJmatch tests a couple of times, but OkCuipid has new questions every day which means that I keep looking at the site. Good marketing strategy, or something.
