Are those drives on the front of the Compaq there? If so, the HP. I like the looks of the Compaq better, but having had a laptop with drive trays that come out toward the user instead of on the side once, never again. It just gets way too annoying after a while.

Not sure - they're supposedly the same laptop with a different look.

I find that somewhat hard to believe. While the guts may be the same, the casing is, at least, somewhat different. Just looking at the hinges, I can see a difference. It's not too entirely far-fetched for them to have then rotated the drive bays 90 degrees, in a fit of pique.

Personally I loath Compaq, so I'd go with the HP, anyway :)

I like the HP better in terms of looks, but I'd go with the cheaper one. :-)

Same price. :-)

If you're going to be staring at it for hours on end, go with the one with the better contrast between screen and frame, the HP.

I was thinking about that - but it might be the opposite for me. I tend to use dark backgrounds (like Radiance (the moon) in XP) and I use black backgrounds in terminal windows. I'm fond of the classic green on black. Since most of the windows I use are dark (even my LJ is black background) it might work with the light surround.

I don't know for sure yet.

i like the silver one.

maybe if you polish it enough, you can use it as a mirror and gaze at yourself when you're bored?

that's what i'd do anyway :P

To answer someone's question a bit back, those things on the front of the HP are a set of Harmon/Kardon speakers, not drives. The HP's DVD/CD-RW drive is on the right-hand side.

After checking the setups of the two of 'em out, I'd say go with the HP. Granted, the differences are minor at best and cosmetic at worst, but when I was checking at the configure to order kiosk over here at work, I noticed that the HP has an extra $150 in rebates this week that the Compaq didn't have, but that might be only if you get it at Best Buy.

the HP. never buy compaq.

Compaq used to be pretty bad - we had Compaq laptops at GTEI - but they got a lot better. Now that HP owns them, they're really just the 'consumer' HP product line. The two laptops are internally identical from what I can tell - same board, etc.

I was kind of leaning toward the Compaq bwcause it seems to have that shiny Ti/AlBook look. And I think the Compaq is a tiny bit cheaper - they are offering a special discount on a second battery, 50% off... Decisions...

Both HP and Compaq are on my sh*t list. HP for misleading me about a laptop purchase; salesgeek swore six ways to the sun that it was Linux compatible-- and acted annoyed and put upon when I came back to return it, pointing out that not being able to run X qualified as "not Linux compatible." At least they did finally take it back.

Compaq in general for end-of-lifing a desktop I had just freakin' bought, with one of Intel's ill-advised forays into the multimedia market in the soundcard slot.

I'd have to pice the HP because it comes with a free picture of a kid. That's pretty hard to beat!

In truth, I'd take the HP. I've had really good experiences with their support all over the world. Never had to deal with Compaq.

Ummm... you do all realize that Compaq and HP are the same company, don't you?

I'd go with the HP, but I'm a jet black person (as opposed to a brushed aluminum person).
zonereyrie From: zonereyrie Date: March 10th, 2004 02:05 pm (UTC) (Direct Link)
Yes, I do. That's why I said it is only cosmetic. They're really the same laptop with different chrome.

have to say, i'm in the humble minority who likes the silver-ish one better. it's all one color, doesn't have the interruption in the middle like the black one.

I'm going to join the masses in going for the HP one. But then I'm goth and going for black :p I think it does look smarter though.

The one with the darker casing, it's better suited to watch movies on it in a dark room (like a hotel if you're abroad).
Usually the darker surface is also nicer in sunny environments because it doesn't reflect as much sunlight.

Oh, and sysadmins are supposed to wear black.
