I caved. I ordered the HP (black) notebook - the Pavillon zv5000z. I spec'd it out with the Athlon 64 3200+, XP Home, 256MB DDR[1], 60 GB HD, DVD/CD-RW, 11b/g + BlueTooth, 15.4" WVA WSXGA+ (1680x1050), GeForce 4 440 Go 64MB, MS-Works/Money[2], 12 cell battery, and 'Built in Bay' w/USB digital drive (and free 64MB SD card)[3].

1 - I deliberately under-ordered the RAM because I can get RAM a hell of a lot cheaper elsewhere. Going from 512 (2x256) to 256 saved $100. For that I can get a 512MB stick and go to 768MB. Or I may get 2x512 and sell the 256MB, or something....

2 - I have no use for Works/Money. If it is salable I will, but I plan to use OpenOffice. It was just the cheapest option.

3 - The option was a built-in floppy drive, nothing, or this accessory bay. I pretty much never use floppies anymore. I haven't stuck the floppy drive in my old laptop in... at least a year, easily much longer. The machine already has a 5-in-1 card reader, so this makes 2 SD/MMC slots. But this one pops out and has a USB connector, so I could use it to swap with someone else by putting things on a card and plugging it into their machine. OK, so for <$50 I thought it was neat.

I also picked up the leather case. And I found a coupon code for 10% off. (PC2039 for anyone looking to order.) Total came to $1,540.89. And that's before the $100 mail in rebate. Which I think is pretty good for what I'll be getting. That's less than half what I paid for my first laptop in 1994 - a Toshiba T4800CT 486-75 with 8MB RAM and a 500MB HD. :-)

I suppose I'll be selling my current laptop - A Dell Inspiron 4000 (IIRC, it is home) - a PII-400. It is in decent shape, and it has a modular drive bay - for which I have a second battery, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, ZIP100, and Floppy module. I also have the docking station and DC power cord (cigarette lighter, aircraft, etc), and a second power brick. I think I have all the accessories they made for it...

I happen to be needing a laptop. Nothing too fabulous - just enough to run ACT, MS Office and get online.

If you are planning on seeling or know anyone who is, would you mind keeping me in mind?

BTW...I preferred the black model vs. the grey, too.

I've started to use Moneydance which is $30 for a license and you get 100 transactions on the trial. It's multi-platform too. Reason is because Carl moved in and we need to better coordinate finances. So far, it has some bugs, but I'm liking it.
