Stranded at the Airport
This has come up a few times in the past few days in conversation and I was kind of surprised by the number of geeks who *didn't* know about this. It originally came up because of the forthcoming Spielberg/Hanks picture 'The Terminal' which appears to be loosely based off of this true story.

Yes, there really is a man who has been stranded at Charles De Gaulle Airport since 1988! August 26, 1988 to be precise - and his name is Merhan Karimi Nasseri. This story is one of those things that is almost impossible to believe - like something right out of Catch 22. And it is kind of scary to think that it can really happen.

That's very scary...it's also the second disturbing thing I've heard about the Paris airport today. Since I'm flying in there in August, my already overactive imagination is going overboard ;-)

Nice. I spent 2 months in Europe in 1994 when I was finishing my history degree. If you have a chance to get to the Normandy coast area I'd do it - beautiful area and nice people. And this is the 60th anniversary of D-Day so there might be some historic stuff going on.

Yeah, I'm really excited...I was in Italy three years ago, I went to Rome and Naples. This will be my first time in France though...

I'm also going there in August. This story made me feel more sad than anything else. That poor man. I wonder if he's still there? The latest date of information in the story was 1999.

Charles de Gaul airport is quite fun to visit if you like 60s concrete architecture; I've gone through it a couple of times when I was working at the previous place thanks to me working in the UK with my manager and the rest of the team I was in being based in Paris.
