SpaceShipOne is back on the ground safely, and it sounds like they hit 100km. Mike Melvill is an astronaut.

I am so stoked.

This is part of a contest, right? So they have to do two more flights?

Rutan said this flight doesn't count, but he'll be going after the X-Prize soon. For the X-Prize you have to carry three people, or at least one person and ballast to simulate to others. And you have to do it twice in two weeks.

Call me fussy, call me naïve, but I really, really wish the first private spacecraft didn't have such a stupid markety name. If we ever do encounter an alien civilization and start comparing notes on our early space exploration efforts, I'm going to feel acute embarrassment.

I am not really impressed unless they go into orbit.

What's really amusing is that right after he did it, the FAA wet their pens and starting drawing up guidelines for an "Astronaut" certificate rating.

Which goes to show that wherever their is progress, bureaucracy is about two steps behind.

And NASA is probably furious, since this is another step towards the commercialization of space.
