Valedictorian who ripped school denied diploma

The valedictorian of a Brooklyn high school was escorted out of the building and denied her diploma yesterday because she trashed the school in a scorching graduation speech.

I think this is cool. :-)

That the valedictorian stood up in front of the school and aired the dirty laundry the school had been trying to hush, and, in a way, that the school was stupid enough to withhold her diploma and thereby give her press coverage! So now it isn't just the audience who hears about it, it is news!

Good for her!

And yeah, I'm kind of randomly brain dumping tonight - I'm tired and wired. I should go home...

What a horrible lesson to teach young people. "Don't say what's on your mind or speak out against what's wrong, or you'll get screwed".

Of course after the news coverage, the girl won't really NEED a diploma, she can just frame that article and hang it on her wall. i know I would...

Sheesh. I'm glad I just refused to speak.

"If you can't say anything nice..." So I didn't.

Re: Update on this story for ya

About what I expected to happen. Someone with an ounce of sanity was probably horrified at this and stomped hard on the administrators who did it. To stop the bad publicity, if nothing else.

Funny. The school I graduated from tried something similar, only against the whole class. They didn't make it, though, if only because the requirement that you mustn't make your school bad came with the diploma, not before ;)

(We published a students newsletter, and in the last issue (after tests, before receiving our diplomas) we weren't exactly, erm, youknowhat)
