Who hosts pr0n?
One of our clients at work, primarily a phone sex site (you buy minutes on the website, then the girl calls you), is looking for a new web hosting company which can also handle streaming media. I've asked for more details on what they need, but for now I figured I'd throw out a wide net. Any suggestions? Comment or hit me at work - megazone at cyphermint dot com.

We don't care if a customer has pr0n, though if they are heavy with the streaming media, I daresay the costs could skyrocket pretty quick. Anyways, pricing foo is at http://www.panix.com/corp/cweb.html.

Why not give DH a look...
From their KB (not sure if non-DH customers can see this, so c&p'ing)...
Can I have an adult website or dreambook?
Of course!

DreamHost does not restrict the content of sites hosted on our servers, except if that content is illegal in the United States. Illegal content includes:

* blatant copyright infringement
* libel
* child pornography

Other than this, go crazy!
Also, http://www.dreamhost.com/tos.html
As for streaming, they have Quicktime Streaming Server. According to their KB, all media that can be streamed via HTTP are streamable (i.e. RM), but not if it requires server software...

Re: Dreamhost?

I was going to suggest Dreamhost too.
I wouldn't mind having the referral (animecon) but mrdini was here first...

Back at EUnet, we had a brief interlude with sex sites. The conclusio: if they're anything like successful, their bandwidth demands skyrocket. And I mean that like in: when they can serve X customers over Y bandwidth, they need/want 4*Y for 2*X, simply because once they have them, the pr0n customers want more and better stuff *per customer* (and they pay for it, which is the sweet part of the deal).
We had a customer who went from a single E1 to STM-1, in less than half a year.

So, essentially, what your customer's probably looking for is an ISP who can fscking scale. And that means one of the Big players, in one of the Big housing centers. And he really wants to do the streaming by himself, if just because one or more employees are cheaper than buying a complete "service package".

I'm not sure how technical they are, or what they have for bandwidth now. The site is http://www.crystaldiamondcastle.com/ - right now it looks like mostly static pages selling the phone sex services. I'm not sure what they'll be streaming, sounds like a new area.

Crystal (the madame, as it were) asked during a call today if we did hosting (we don't, just payment services) or if we knew anyone who did and who could do streaming media because she's been unhappy with her host.

"In Soviet Russia, phone sex calls *you!*"

That being said, you might ask donnerjack what his people are running these days (Rackspace).

My former corporate master will host porn, or did Back in the Day, but I am hesitant to recommend them, as their service level tended to decline sharply when porn was involved, depending on who thought we shouldn't be handling the business that week. (Failure to recommend aggressive site upgrades, slow response times on inquiries about getting more bandwidth or more machines, etc., and my manager commenting once that he didn't believe we should really be *too* proactive about the needs of customers in the Adult Line of Work.)

On an unrelated note...

Are you still a TiVophile?

How does it interact (if at all) with OnDemand-type Cable Service?
zonereyrie From: zonereyrie Date: July 20th, 2004 04:53 pm (UTC) (Direct Link)
Extreme, yes.

But the TiVo really isn't aware of on demand content, just scheduled content. You would probably just watch 'LiveTV' and watch the on demand content real time using the cable box controls for it.

You could record it just by telling the TiVo to record something else for a long enough period, then changing the channel on the cable box on it (it doesn't know) - so the guide data for the recording will be whatever it thought it recorded.

Unless you have one of the DVD-RW/TiVo units. Since those are setup to accept home movies (VHS to DVD dumps) you have the option of naming recordings, etc. So you could use that facility to record the OnDemand stuff.

too bad.

The OnDemand X-Treme Menu system is absolutely retarded.
