SpaceShipOne lands after heart-stopping ride
MOJAVE DESERT, California (CNN) -- SpaceShipOne successfully blasted into space at about Mach 3, or three times the speed of sound, on Wednesday in its quest to win the Ansari X Prize.

Oh, and Richard Branson is still my freakin' idol:
Virgin Atlantic Airways founder Richard Branson announced on Monday that he would invest $25 million in a new space venture, to be called Virgin Galactic. The project will license Scaled Composite's SpaceShipOne technology for commercial suborbital flights starting at about $200,000. He expects it could fly 3,000 people within five years.

Howard Hughes left some big shoes to fill in the 'nutty billionaire' arena, but Branson is putting in a good effort.

I am: excited excited

Giving Branson $200,000 to spend a few minutes weightless... y'know, maybe :-) If it helps get man back out into space I may well go for it!

This story makes me think I should start saving up :-)

Ah, Richard Branson. Tap-dancing recklessly along the fine, fine line between "boldly ahead of his time" and "comically premature".

One hopes that after the initial "toy" phase, they'd actually move into using the suborbital flight technology to get somewhere, rather than just enabling rich people to punt around pretending to be Al Shepard.

I realize there isn't anywhere to go in outer space itself, but they could at least work on making it into a useful get-from-somewhere-on-Earth-to-somewhere-else-on-Earth service.

This whole thing sounds as nutty as some bike shop owners cobbling together a flying machine and taking short hops down some beach. :-)
