Proof That Any Hackneyed Franchise Can Be Made Interesting; A Short Story

She looks at him wide-eyed. Underneath the table, she cocks the Glock she keep strapped underneath her crepe skirt.

"And you always carry a Glock," he says. "That's not in your dossier, by the way. I recognize it by the sound of the hammer. Thigh or ankle?"

Glocks are hammerless. As a Glock owner this leapt off the screen and strangled my suspension of disbelief.

A better way to put it might be...

"You cannot hand-cock the hammer on a Glock."

A Glock does have something similiar to a hammer internally, as you doubtless know. For the rest of the people reading this post, it's called a striker. It looks a lot like a hammer, but smaller and without any kind of spur on it. But it's still a spring-driven piece of metal on a pivot that hits the firing pin.

I have small hands myself, and I find I prefer large frame handguns to small frame. I simply can't properly wrap my hands around small grips. The larger frames, like the Browning Hi-Power and Beretta 92 series, just fit better. I'd like to give the Walther P99 a go, but there are no places around here to do that anymore.

My finger span, thumb to pinky, is 7.75 inches, and I figure the extra 3/4 inch is because my palms are probably a little wider than yours, just shy of 3.5 inches across the middle.

Have you tried one of the Baby Glocks? AKA, somewhat sexistly, the 'Lady Glocks'? Smaller frames with smaller grips.

Even I knew this. And you'd think someone who didn't know would look it up.

I think the problem is that the very word "Glock" sounds 'cool', so authors like to use for "cred".

The worst still is of course Sawyers little rant about Tec-9's in his Neanderthal Parallax novels. Me makes them sound like handheld Bren guns, when they are really the firearm equivalent of a Yugo painted with go-fast stripes and with a badly built aftermarket spoiler.

Okay... I feel like an idiot now... But then again, I pay more attention to knives not guns.

Glocks and hammers

I, uh, wrote this in about twenty minutes, no rewrites. I just used a Glock because it sounded cool.

I'm not a gun guy, as you can tell.

Yeah, I figured you weren't into guns. :-) But it really was nice work, I would actually like to read a full story done in that style.
