Very nice...
Tonight's episode of Stand Alone Complex was intense. Very nice.

I know it is weird, but the GitS universe is where I want to live. That's the tech level I dream about, literally.

No, I can totally understand that. The GitS:SAC universe, like most late S/F, ignores a lot of the consequences the tech depicted has, like the simple fact that it's rapidly accelerating towards a denouement of some kind just because there's so much integration, but it's an interesting, if somewhat complicated and potentially disturbing time period. It's only twenty years away.

Jungle Cruise was a rather disturbing episode, but I did like the way it fleshed out Batou's character a lot. The two CIA agents were a lot more dorky in the original; their Japanese was terrible, and you were never sure if it was an act or not. The butterflies in the flashback are real blood-drinking butterflies found in Southeast Asia called calpytra eustrigata.

Hell, I'd go for 20/10 vision for life with no floaters and no risk of retinal detachment in a second. Problem is, it comes with computer security inferior to that of the present day. As nice as the tech is, if it comes with a script kiddie 0w|\|z0ring my cyberbrain, I'm not sure it's worth it.

On the other hand, I can't recall a TV SF universe in which IS security is actually practiced. (And only one SF book comes to mind -- Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep.) On the gripping hand, the writers of the new BG series turn it into a plot point -- the only Battlestar not owned and destroyed by the sexpot script kiddiesCylons is the one without any computer networks.

There is computer and network security in GitS, it has been a plot point. It seems like the average script kiddie, or average hacker, can't get into cyberbrains. Only the true class A hackers (The Laughing Man), and the advanced military (specialists - like today's NSA) seem to get into them. I expect it is like today - the average person probably goes and installs all kinds of 'cool shit' and gets warezed. :-)

Serves them right.

*Note to self*

If I ever buy you something for christmas... make sure it's hack proof. Got it.

Though now I'm kinda wishing I had caught the episode. Missed it because of a migrane. I'm still not sure if I like Stand Alone either (Watching it because it's a Shirow) But the major seems a bit colder in it than she was in the original movie. Not sure if I like that yet.

I'm frankly surprised they aired this episodem even late at night. It's _really_ intense.
