OK, I haven't posted much the past few days - been busy. Friday I closed on the house, finally, Yay, and all that. After the closing I went to work, since I'd already missed time for the previous two attempts at closing. I worked a long day to make up some of that time, to avoid burning more vacation time.

I got up early Saturday to meet my parents. They drove over from NY (where they are for the summer) to help me get started. They brought some stuff from the old house that they've had in storage - patio furniture, some kitchen stuff, tools, etc. My dad also gave me a new string trimmer and lawn mower, which was cool. My dad and I spent the day working outside. The seller hadn't done shit this year - the lawn was 2-3' deep, huge weeds, the trees in the back had taken over half the yard, etc. So we attacked it - he weed-whacked the yard and I raked up the grass. We trimmed the trees way back to the fence, which made the back yard look twice as big. There was a small tree growing up along the corner of the house, AGAINST the house, and all kinds of stuff on the back steps - all cut down. I learned that a) I'm way out of shape and b) dehydration sucks. We got cleaned up - they at their hotel and me at my apt - and hit Picadilly Pub for dinner. I ended up crashing early because I was exhausted, and still sleep deprived since I hadn't been sleeping well the entire previous week.

Sunday I was up early again and back over to the house with them - stopping to buy a couple quarts of Gatorade to avoid the previous day's dehydration. My mom continued to work inside, cleaning and such, and measured my windows for blinds, which she went off and bought while my dad and I did more outside. I mowed the lawn, since it had a chance to dry a bit after removing the bulk the previous day (it was so tall a lot of it had laid down from rain, etc) - it looks much better now. We also trimmed more trees in the back and unloaded more of the trailer of tools and stuff into the shed. Well, after ripping out some stuff in the shed to make more room. (I guess some old owner had a dog and had built a shelter for it inside the shed.) We also attacked the fence. There were chain-link gates on other side of the house, and a small bit of fence on one side, and we removed all of that. A couple of the poles I could tear out of the ground, one was in too solid and against the house, so we sawed that one off at the ground. Then we went around the front, where there was a 3' high chain-link around the yard. We took all the chain-link down, and the horizontal members. The poles are still up because we need to get some dirt to fill in the holes when we rip them out. I think it looks a lot better with the fence gone, and it will be easier to mow now since I can go right to the edges and not have to trim around the fence.

They left in mid-afternoon to get back to NY before it was too late. I did a little more clean-up, then I went home too. I got cleaned up, and since everyone else begged off of Sunday dinner, I decided to go see Batman Begins. I may post about the movie - short version, I think it was the best Batman movie ever and I loved it. I know not all my friends agree, and there were weak parts, but I still think it kicked ass. Anyway, I was going to have dinner after the movie, which got out at like 21:20, but I was suddenly overwhelmed by fatigue. I went home, ate Pop-Tarts because I was too tired to cook, yet hungry, and passed out. So we got a lot done this weekend.

There are two bad points though. 1) It was pretty cloudy on Saturday, and even rained a bit, so I didn't think much of the sun. Well, apparently there was enough of it because I have a VERY bad sunburn on the top of my head. My scalp is bright red, and it really hurts. I'm in constant pain, and if I touch it it just makes it worse. And it makes the skin feel 'tight', so it feels like something is wrapped about my head, squeezing my skull. And *that* has given me a wicked headache. This sucks. (And it will be real pretty when it peels.) 2) Right at the end of the day Sunday I put my right foot into a hole and twisted my ankle. I'm an idiot, because the hole was from a rock *I HAD MOVED MYSELF* to get it out of the lawn before I mowed. This is the same ankle I twisted like a week or so back. So that hurts again. Otherwise I've got the general mild aches of someone who isn't in great shape who spent the weekend physically exerting myself, but that's not so bad.

Oh, a third point, I'm allergic to a lot of stuff. I spent the weekend mowing, trimming, raking, etc. Connect the dots. Claritin helped during the day, but it wore off in the middle of the night Sat-Sun and I woke up at like 05:00 stuffed up and wheezing. Sudafed let me get more sleep. Then last night when I got home I could already feel it, so I took Sudafed again, and then again when I woke up in the middle of the night. Hurrah for modern medicine.

Today I made a lot of phone calls - gas and electric are in my name. My phone will be on tomorrow, with a new number. (Eh, I don't use my landline much anyway, so whatever.) Charter is coming for the cable on Friday. Terminix will be doing pest control on Thursday - there are a few kinds of ants around the foundation I saw while working, and I think we found termites in the shed (not the house though), so they'll do the perimiter treatment. Too many friends have reported shit like carpenter ants eating their houses lately. The heating company should call me tomorrow to schedule service on that system. I have a call into a waste disposal company to come haul away the yard debris, fencing, etc. (Way too much for the curb.) ADT will be out Wednesday to give me an estimate on the full system (I'm looking for burglary, fire, and carbon monoxide monitoring). No one would answer the phone at the water department today, and I called a lot, and repeatedly, so I'll try again tomorrow. And I need to call Speakeasy, but I think they'll need the phone on to check the line. Edit: Speakeasy has been called, ADSL install scheduled.

I'm probably forgetting something. :-)

My parents may be coming back this weekend, they weren't sure and they're supposed to call to let me know (actually they were supposed to call me today and didn't, hmm... OK. I got the machine at the camp... *worry*... OK, got my dad on his cell, he's out past his bed-time. :-) (He's an 'up before dawn' kind of guy, I'm a 'go to bed around dawn' kind of guy.)) - anyway, so still don't know if they'll make it next week. If they do we plan to rip out those fence posts, do some more tree trimming (he's going to bring one of those trimmers which are basically chainsaws on 12' poles), and probably pressure wash the deck, driveway, etc. (Oh, he gave me one of those too.) I'm going to start moving things over bit by but.

AH! I was forgetting something, I need to call a locksmith and have deadbolts installed, and all the locks replaced. 1. 3 of 4 doors lack deadbolts, or even places to put them - so they need to be drilled. 2. I don't know who out there has keys to all the locks, so no way am I keeping them. Guess I'll call someone for that tomorrow.

My head hurts so much I think I'm going to finish what I'm doing, find dinner, and crash. I didn't sleep well last night because there is no way I can lie in bed without my head on the pillow, and it is burned right around. So I can get comfortable, but then I'd move or something and rub my head and wake up. I'll be scruffy for a while because I am NOT dragging sharp steel over my scalp while it hurts like this. :-)

Sorry if I seem to have been ignoring anyone, I've skimmed LJ but I've been so busy and/or tired I haven't replied to some things I normally would reply to.

And I feel like I heel for letting this slip, too focused on the house - Happy Birthday z_gryphon!

2) Water babe ... water not sports drinks unless you are doing a shit ton of stuff (like you were ... but ... yeah)

3) Vinegar for your head! You will smell like shit, but trust me it will feel sooooooo F-in good!

5) I want TONS of photos of that house babe! Sounds like you are making sooo much progress. I hope for you, that you took before and after photos, if not, get to it! Not like you have anything better to do! ;)

6) "F-in" because Aunt Malone needs to learn how to control her words :)

Take care of you

Antihistamines help my sunburns. Won't hurt the allergies either. Of course then you'll be even more groggy, but what can you do?

Buy a hat. Skin cancer is no joke.

And aloe vera gel is usually good for sunburns but that kind of burn you're going to hurt no matter what. (I find that it does a nice job of light moisturizing after shaving as well, so it's worth buying.) They used to sell spray stuff, Solarcaine, to fight the pain of sunburn. I haven't needed it in years, but they probably sell something like it. Other people get sunburns and need relief.

I don't like acid rubbed on my skin when it's already abraded, but whatever works. When you're at home, you could try using a spray bottle filled with water and misting your head.

After the burn fades (3-4 days?) you'll want to treat that skin well to avoid scarring from the peel.

Aloe Vera for now, to help heal the burn. When it fades and the burn starts to peel, slather lotion on your head. It will help with that dry/tight feeling. And buy a hat, silly.

(Of course, I am one to talk, because I got my first Driver Arm Sunburn of the year today. Hehehe.)

I have this mental image of Zoner rigging a network of tubes filled with cooled aloe vera gel to his Bluetooth headset and then across his scalp. ;)

Ha! For some reason I keep picturing him in like a HUGE straw hat with a sun flower sticking out the side! Put a straw in his mouth and he would be set! :)

Best visual ever!!!

Yes! Get one of those big conical coolie hats! Then you'll look like the wandering badass in an old samurai flick.

Oh, and don't worry about the birthday thing - according to the time stamp, it was still the right day when you posted it. I haven't been home all day anyway; it was my first full day off this month (no, really) and I've been in Bangor at the movies all day.

See anything good?

Oh - I knocked a few things off your Amazon Wishlist. Sorry I didn't remember to order them in time to be there for your b'day, but they should be there in a few days. :-)

Batman Begins for the first time and Episode III again (by way of a sort of double-check).

I quite enjoyed Batman Begins, though I see my friends page is sharply divided on the issue. Episode III was the same the second time - the well-done parts were still well-done, the dumb parts were still... dumb. Good fight choreography, though.

Dig out your "PAT" hat if you still have it, or something similar.

I learned years ago to wear a cloth baseball cap.

And I agree with the comments about gatorade. About the only time you should be drinking it is when you are exerting yourself that it tastes like the advertised flavor (and not salty).

You have amazing parents! What a great father/son bonding experience for you, too.

Who are you using for waste disposal? I need to find someone for my house.

I'm not sure yet - the company I called yesterday never called me back, so fuck 'em, I'm going to look for someone else. :-)
