Flash pop-ups - stopping them in Firefox
As pop-up blockers have spread, blocking JavaScript pop-ups, the arms race has moved on. Some devious folks figured out that you could get Flash to spawn pop-up windows too. So now more and more pages have little Flash widgets in them which spawn ad windows. When I started using Firefox, and I turned on pop--up blocking, I rarely saw any pop-ups. But over the past couple of months I've been seeing more and more - sites using Flash to do their dirty work.

Last night i got fed up enough that I went looking for a solution, other than blocking Flash in general since I do find it useful on many sites, and I found this page.

1. Type about:config into the Firefox location bar.
2. Right-click on the page and select New and then Integer.
3. Name it privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins
4. Set the value to 2.

The possible values are:

0: Allow all popups from plugins.
1: Allow popups, but limit them to dom.popup_maximum.
2: Block popups from plugins.
3: Block popups from plugins, even on whitelisted sites.

It has worked fairly well for me so far, sites I know I got pop-ups on, I'm not.

I've also been trying out the noscript extension over the past couple of days. Only problem has been remembering to turn it on when sites act kooky and I want to use Javascript. :)

Oh, thank you thank you thank you SO Much.

Does this work in regular Mozilla, as well?

I'm not sure, but it shouldn't hurt to try it - if Mozilla doesn't recognize the property is just ignores it.
