CES 2006
I just booked my trip for CES 2006, January 4-9 in Las Vegas. (The show is 5-8.) I'm staying at the Imperial Palace, which was the best deal I could find near the Convention Center. I thought I was booking early enough - HAH! Right, CES is the biggest show in Vegas, really should book in the spring for the next year... If someone I know personally wanted to take a trip to Vegas at the same time, I wouldn't object to splitting the room. Even a couple, though it isn't going to be a romantic getaway with me in the room. ;-)

I'm not sure what kind of deal they gave you, but trust me - find something other then the Imperial! Where exactly is your convetion? At THE center or some hotel?

The convention basically uses the entire LVCC and the Sands Convention center. It is big, the largest convention in the US. I checked every other hotel in the area - and they're either full (CES usually sells out every hotel in the area before the show happens) or WAY expensive now. Most of them that still have rooms only have suites and such left. The Imperial is on the monorail, and even within walking distance of the Sands and LVCC. And it is an offical con hotel, so there is a con rate discount, and shuttle busses to the other con locations. Last year I stayed at a non-con hotel and had to deal with cabs, which sucks when several thousand people are all trying to get a cab at the end of the show day. Bleh. :-)

Um yeah, see I lived in Las Vegas in almost spitting distance from the convention center, I'm aware of what they offer silly man ;) Some people just assume it's at the convention center and it turns out to be inside some hotel (as they are almost all set up to handle the normal size conventions).

Most everything is by the tram now so that's not that big a deal ... sold out eh? Did you try the Luxor? I MIGHT be able to work you a deal at the Luxor or the paris, if you're willing to put up with the imperial then by all means - enjoy, I'm just trying to give you a heads up. For someone who does not do Vegas all that often, you might like it - but trust me - DO NOT judge the city based on that hotel! ;)

and here:

If you go to the M&M tell them Malone say's Hello - and in fact ... might I freak you out a moment and tell you that we are about 90% sure we will be in Vegas at the same time *cough* ....

I checked Luxor, Paris, and pretty much everything else - either sold out or rooms are well over $200/night. I'm a low maintanence guy, I'd be happy in a Motel 6. :-) I'll be at the show all day and just need a comfortable place to crash each night. Last year I waited too long and was over at the Lady Luck downtown, the year before that I was at the Artisan which was a bit too out of the way.

It'd be interesting if we're both in town at the same time. :-)

Humm yeah - I can get you $50 off the Luxor but that brings you to about $225 a night, not a cheap time to be going to Vegas. If we still lived there I would offer our guest room to ya.

If yer okay with places like Motel 8 and such, then you will love the palace. It's much better then yer bottom line hotel, just kinda icky compared to it's surroundings.

When we go depends on way too many things to even make a guess, but the beginning of January is an option that we all seem to like - really just depends on what Auggie is up to with his show and bla bla bla.

I'll keep you posted on the status of that, wouldent that be odd ... in a good way I think ... just odd ...

Oh but yeah, check that site out I liked you above - tons of tips on free things to do and cheap crap =)

Carl & I stayed at the Imperial Palace when we went to Vegas (also because it was cheapest on the strip). The good news it's central on the Strip, but the bad news is they stick you in the old motel in the back when you get a cheap room deal, not the main tower. There's an insanely twisted route to get back there and it's more than 10 minutes of walking. It's an adventure to get to your room. The room itself wasn't bad. It was clean and fairly quiet, which is all I really ask for in a hotel.

Well, the 'standard' rooms were all sold out, so I'm in a 'deluxe' room - I don't know if that means I'm in the tower or not...

The Imperial Palace isn't a very good hotel, but it's also not the worst. At least you're not at Fitzgerald's. I understand the circumstances though and given the state of the city during CES, it's probably as good as it's going to get lodging wise.

Things to do in Vegas when you're not at the convention:
Get a capistrami sndwhich at Capriotti's
See the Strip? I guess.
By me a beer.

1. I stayed at the Imperial Palace the last time I was in Vegas (for a somethingawful.com convention). It was...squishy. Like, the floor literally squished after we took a shower, because the water leaked out of the bathroom and into the bedroom, under the carpet. Good times! It was cheap, so I'm not complaining.

2. But as cheap as the Imperial Palace was, it didn't hold a candle to how cheap the Westward Ho was, AND the Westward Ho is much much closer to the convention center. They didn't have space, or didn't you call them too?

They appear to be sold out.

What the hell does that have to do with TiVo?
zonereyrie From: zonereyrie Date: October 7th, 2005 02:28 am (UTC) (Direct Link)
TiVo is an exhibitor at CES. The two main reasons I go are to see what TiVo is up to, and to check out the latest on Blu-ray and HD-DVD. And then I wander around looking at stuff I can't afford.
