OK, I know this is cruel...
But HOW do you develop a paralyzing fear of PICKLES?!?!

I feel bad for her, but at the same time I'm fascinated.

This is excessively cruel, but...

Feed her to the wolves, plz. Darwin shouldn't allow genes like this to survive.

I understand the grip of irrational fear - I have a couple of phobias myself - but mine are things like unstable heights. Edge of a cliff, no problem. Two stories up on a shaky old wooden ladder - not cool. But my phobias have some grounding in fact - if I fall, it'll hurt, possibly a lot, possibly fatally. But pickles? I'd hate to see what happens if someone slips a pickle on her burger and she doesn't notice until she chews it.

I wonder, too... the clip from the show just doesn't tell you enough.

My guess is the pickles are a power focus for her social anxiety, that she's projecting her real issues onto them.

Is that what happens with any phobia?
etherial From: etherial Date: June 27th, 2006 03:04 am (UTC) (Direct Link)
I don't know. I wouldn't exactly say that I have any phobias or can psycho-analyze those of my friends. But she specifically mentions teasing associated with pickles.

Yeah, when others realised she was scared of pickles, they teased her. Same with anyone with any phobia as a kid - kids are cruel that way.

Well, I got teased, but never about my phobias. I don't think kids figured them out.

Of course, you'd have to first get me 20-30 feet off the ground on an unstable object - swaying tree, shaky ladder, unstable scaffold, etc - to trigger my main one. ;-)

I think being scared to eat a McDonald's hamburger because of the pickle would be much more obvious! ^_~

It may be siblings that teased, too, for that matter... pickle for dinner once, and voila - teasing for the rest of her life! :p

OCD, generalized anxiety disorder, anything along that spectrum? It's not like Maury's going to tell you when there's someone to torture on live TV. ;)

I wonder if she was sexually assaulted with a pickle when she was young. I culd see THAT provoking a genuine reaction.

Everyone thinks Jerry Springer is the low of the low. No, Maury Povich is the worst. He puts people on his program like a freak show or performing monkeys. Jerry's guests embarrass themselves, Maury's are embarrassed by him.
