Yeah, our old CTO had a PhD. That was one of the main reasons our old CEO hired him really.

He was a nice enough guy, but he was an academic - literally, he was a prof from UPenn or something like that, on sabbatical - and he kept treating things like ideal situations. Which didn't work well because of real-life issues like budget, schedules, etc. "Ideally we'd do X..." Yes, well, ideally we'd have 10x the funds and twice the time, but we'd don't.

Shoot, apply.

Anyway, when we all move to California and Jer is telecommuting (even more!) and I'm working for Google while Nikki goes to UCSC, you can totally work at Tivo.

You missed a great dinner. 8)

Apply anyway. The worst they can do is say "Sorry, we don't want you." or some similarly diplomatic form of "no".

Talk yourself up to 'em. From what I gather you've got the requisite experience and you love Tivo. Don't sweat the PhD. Dazzle them with your knowledge and skills and they'll realize that whole PhD "strongly preffered" doesn't really mean crap.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Dare to dream, but remember that dreaming about it doesn't make it happen. Do something about it and make it happen. The best opportunities don't come to knock on your door, the best opportunities are the ones you make for yourself.
