I need to get my car inspected before I get pulled over.

My inspection expired at the end of April and I completely failed to notice. This morning on the way to work, however, a Northboro police officer did not fail to notice. I got off with a written warning, but now that I'm aware of it it will bug me until I resolve it. And the next time I get stopped they probably won't be as nice if they see in their system that I was already warned.

I let mine go for 4 months once, got pulled over and given a verbal warning, then let it go for another week before I finally took it to be inspected, so I've been there.

There are gas stations that will do inspections on Saturday. Like the Sunoco on Great Road in Bedford. :-)

My car's registration and inspection ran out last month, but I haven't renewed them yet because - get this - I can't afford to.

See, they changed the rules for the calculation of excise tax in Maine while I was gone. It's now calculated based on the sale price of the car,

and after some minor depreciations the first year or two, it never goes down.

So my car, which is now... what... seven years old, is evaluated for excise purposes as though it were still a brand new 900S convertible, retailing for about $40,000. I forget what the per-hundred rate is right now, but that equates to something like a whole extra car payment, and it's payable when you renew your registration, not whenever you feel arsed to pay it like in MA.

This, like so many other things that have changed about life up here since I last lived here, is not encouraging.

Lucky bastard...

Consider yourself lucky! My sticker expired in September. I didn't notice and got pulled over on October 30th and got a ticket! I couldn't believe he didn't give me a warning since it wasn't even a full month yet.

I got it inspected the same day and then went to court a few months later. I presented the inspection test results taken less than three hours after I got the ticket where the car passed and simply explained that I forgot. The magistrate let me off without the fine.

The full ticket story is here (down on Oct 30).

Thanks for the Reminder

Mine expires in July. I have to remember to get it inspected as soon as I get back from vacation.
