Touchless car washes are for the weak.

I agree, but it seems like all of the automated car washes around here went 'touchless' a while back. This one used to have brushes and stuff, but a couple of years ago all the "Ernie's" chain seems to have rebranded as "Ernie's Touchless". I know people think it doesn't scratch the car or whatever, but it doesn't clean as well. Still, it is better than nothing and I don't generally have time to spend washing it myself.

Here in Podunk we only have the kind where you shove $10 worth of quarters in the wall and a hose turns on for 30 seconds. (I may have exaggerated one, the other, or both of those numbers.) I generally can't be arsed to use those either; it's too much faff. I do love a good old-fashioned automatic, though, with the hanging felt strips and whatnot. Going to the automatic car wash in Bangor was one of the highlights of a trip to the city when I was little. Sometimes we'd wash the car twice just for bonus fun. The entertainment options around here are limited. :)

OTOH, there was a "compact touchless" system at one of the gas stations near Livingston, back in the day, that was kind of cool because the car didn't move. Instead of the usual "conveyor belt through the long building" thing, it had a bunch of articulated things that moved around spraying from different angles. Kind of like the robots that assemble cars, only with hoses instead of welders. That was neat. The downside was that it didn't get the car all that clean, but hey, you can't have everything.

I just noticed that your LJ page still has links to Cyphermint and "Get Firefox 2!" on it. "I make no promises that this journal will be timely" indeed. :)
