Well, it doesn't install it by default when you turn on linux compatibility because that just assumes that you want to be able to run linux binaries on your system (i.e. StarOffice, before it became OpenOffice and got a BSD binary). So there's no assumption that you'll want to mount a linux FS, it just creates the compatibility hooks in the kernel, the linux /proc, etc. Personally I've never had a problem mounting linux drives, but I don't think I've ever tried to mount an ext3 drive, just ext2. If you have BSD centric issues, feel free to drop onto #eyrie and /msg donnerjack or dj|werk (if it's during the day). I'm usually around and bored, and always happy to spread the gospel of BSD. :) Or , naturally, tarxzf and ardaniel have the BSD Fu.
